Encapsulation of Probiotic Bacteria for Use in Farming
Ambient Storage of Probiotic Bacteria
Probiotic bacteria encapsulated in Bac-in-a-Box® can be freeze dried and then stored for long periods at ambient temepature without degradation, making it easy to transport the bacteria without a cold-chain.
Acid Protection of Probiotic Bacteria
One of the problems with the administration of probiotic bacteria in farm settings is that most of the bacteria are rapidly destroyed in the stomach of the animals which is highly acidic, and thus never make it to the small intestine where they are required.
Bac-in-a-Box® is used to encapsulate millions of probiotic bacteria per capsule which are then protected from the acid conditions in the stomach but get released in the small intestine.
To demonstrate the use of Bac-in-a-Box® technology, we have for instance shown that encapsulated probiotic bacteria (lactobacillus acidophilus or johnsonii) will survive exposure to pH2 for 2 hours with only a 5% reduction in number of live bacteria, whilst non-encapsulated bacteria are non-detactable after this time.
Advantages of encapsulation of probiotic bacteria using Bac-in-a-Box include:
- Acid protection whilst crossing the stomach
- Release in small intestine
- Stable at ambient temperature after freeze drying
- Rehydrate well from freeze dried form
