Bacteria Encapsulation
- Provide them with a microenvironment to grow in
- Protect them from low pH (such as in the stomach)
- Allow their release in the lower gut
- Allow them to be freeze dried and stored at ambient temperature
- Provide a means to easily store and transport them

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What it does
The Bac-in-a-Box® technology, developed by Austrianova, is a means to protect, isolate, store and transport living bacteria and yeast.
Why its unique
The Bac-in-a-Box® technology is based on a biopolymer derived from cotton and is has unique acid resistance and release properties.
Why it works
The Bac-in-a-Box® technology builds a porous capsule round the bacteria or yeast, allowing free diffusion of nutrients in, and waste products out.
What it can be used for
In nutrition, it enables encapsulated probiotic bacteria to pass through the stomach acid unharmed and be released in the lower intestine.
In farming, the Bac-in-a-Box® technology provides a means to easily store and transport probiotic bacteria at ambient temperature and to protect them from destruction in the stomach acid, allowing them to be more effective at lower cost.
In fermentation, it allows yeast to be applied and then easily removed since the yeast remain encapsulated within the capsules which are large enough to be simply removed.
In cosmetics, the Bac-in-a-Box® technology provides a means to transfer “active centres” of probiotic bacteria to soap or body wash. Gel8 is approved and listed in the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients.
In bio-remediation it allows remediating bacteria to be encapsulated, applied in an environmental situation, and then easily retrieved again and removed.
The technology also forms the basis of a powerful research tool.
What its made of
The company’s proprietary cell packaging material, Gel8, used for the Bac-in-a-Box® technology, is derived from a naturally occurring material and is thus harmless to the environment, biologically inert and has been shown to be safe in humans
Applications
Probiotics for Humans
Probiotics for Livestock
Probiotic bacteria encapsulated in Bac-in-a-Box® can be freeze dried and then stored for long periods at ambient temepature without degradation, making it easy to transport the bacteria without a cold-chain.
Fecal Microbiome Transplantation
Our Bac-in-a-Boc capsules allow the delivery of members of the microbiome by the oral route, simplify treatments and making them more acceptable and routine. Our Bac-in-a-Box technology protects from acid degradation and loss of bacteria in the stomach, allowing stoichiometric delivery to the lower intestine.
Metabolizm Optimization
Our Bac-in-a-Box encapsulation technology allows millions of bacteria or yeast to be enclosed in tiny (0.5mm diameter) spheres made of our patented natural polymer, cellulose sulphate. The nature of the encapsulation technology means that the bacteria or yeast can grow within the capsules to completely fill them up
Aquaculture
Seafood is a growing part of the economy, but its economic value is diminished by a number of infectious diseases that reduce commercial species’ growth and survivorship or decrease seafood quality. These infections are particularly problematic in the stressful and crowded conditions of aquaculture. Infectious diseases of farmed oysters, shrimp, abalone, and various fishes, particularly Atlantic salmon, cost billions of dollars each year.
Bioremediation
As humankind’s demands on the natural environment continue to increase, so will the necessity for environmental protection and monitoring. Many types of bacteria and algae are being developed for such applications; for example, anaerobic bacteria that can digest crude oil to mop up oil spills, algae that can be grown in salt- or waste- water to clean up these waters and simultaneously produce oils that can be refined into biofuels like ethanol.
Cosmetics
Probiotic bacteria are being increasingly used in soaps, for example bacteria that are naturally found to balance the pH environment on the skin can be added. Bac-in-a-Box® technology will increase survival and functionality to such bacteria.
Agriculture
Encapsulation of bacteria or viruses used to control pests. These capsules can be dropped onto the fields from an airplane.
Yeast
Yeast can be easily encapsulated using the Bac-in-a-Box® technology. The encapsulated yeast can be freeze dried and stored for long periods at ambient temperatures.
